About Heart Compression Resuscitation LLC
We are the inventor of a revolutionary hands-only CPR training manikin known as Chest Compression Charlie™. Our patented heart compression simulation invention is designed to help CPR trainers provide a more realistic chest compression training experience. Vision Statement
Heart Compression Resuscitation LLC's CPR "chest compression" manikin will be widely recognized as the most realistic and effective CPR training manikin available, and a significant factor in the reduction in the number of lives lost due to cardiac arrest.
Mission Statement
Heart Compression Resuscitation LLC is dedicated to providing CPR trainers with a new standard in "truer-to-life" training manikins, which will bring a dramatically more realistic CPR training so that bystanders will be better trained and more likely to react to emergencies, and bystanders and professionals alike will retain their training much longer and have greater confidence in their ability to save lives.
Our History
Early Experiences and Insights Providing CPR Training
In his younger years, Dan May, the founder of Heart Compression Resuscitation LLC, served as a lifeguard and later as a water safety instructor for the American Red Cross. He also directed a local swim program with more than 300 students, where he taught CPR to lifeguards in training. Even then, Dan felt that the CPR manikins used in training were unrealistic and ineffective. Based on his own experience performing CPR on a human being, he knew the real-life “feel” was significantly different from what students experienced in class.
Recognizing the Need for Realism
Years later, Dan attended a corporate-sponsored CPR class taught by the local fire department and noticed that little had changed — the same unrealistic manikins were still being used. Recognizing the need for a better CPR training tool, he researched the CPR manikin industry and consulted a patent attorney about existing patents. Finding no existing patents, Dan set out to design a manikin that would provide a dramatically more realistic CPR training experience, which would help trainees develop longer-lasting muscle memory of the “real feel” of the life-saving process.
The First Prototype
In 2009, Dan filed a patent application to protect the idea of a device that simulates rib cracking and cartilage tearing during CPR training. This led to his first prototype, known as HCR Device I, which was beta tested by EMS personnel, the UA Sarver Heart Center, the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, professional trainers at local American Heart Association hospital training centers, and local American Red Cross trainers.
Developing Our Heart Compression Simulation Device Further
Using feedback from those beta tests and further scientific study of the physical dynamics of human chest compression and rebound, we developed the next prototype: HCR Device II. This updated device was designed, built, and tested again by many of the original beta testing group. After receiving very positive feedback from its testing, the HCR Device II mechanism was selected to become the core of our first life-saving training manikin, trademarked as Chest Compression Charlie™ and known informally as Charlie.
